Part Of Speech:

tyrannically: adverb

Exercising power in a cruel or arbitrary way.

Dictatorial, despotic, autocratic, oppressive, repressive, arbitrary, anti-democratic.

Democratic, liberal, easy-going.

Word Origin:

Mid 16th century: from Old French tyrannique, via Latin from Greek turannikos, from turannos (see tyrant).

Use in sentence:

  • A momentary quieting of her tyrannical appetite.
  • A tyrannical government.
  • He was a tyrannical ruler, and died suddenly in 1582.
  • So tyrannical, however, was his rule that in 1316 he was expelled by the popular fury.

Here are some images showing “tyrannical”:

President Snow is one hell of a tyrannical ruler!

  1. This is a really fun idea, Heena! My husband and I are “word people”, haha. His vocabulary far surpasses my own, but we both share a love for learning new words / refreshing with ones we’ve forgotten. This week’s WOW is a good one! 🙂 – Kami
