Here’s the WOW for this week :

Part Of Speech:

Noun [mass noun]

Umbrageous adjective

Offence or annoyance.

A feeling of anger caused by being offended

Archaic: Shade or shadow, especially as cast by trees.

Be upset, be annoyed, take offence, be offended, get huffy, be disgruntled.

Word Origin:

Late Middle English (in sense 2): from Old French, from Latin umbra ‘shadow’. An early sense was ‘shadowy outline’, giving rise to ‘ground for suspicion’, whence the current notion of ‘offence’.

Use In Sentence:

  • Such men are easily offended, take umbrage at trifles, and are unforgiving in their resentments- Sleeper, John Sherburne
  • She took umbrage at his remarks.
