Meaning:

An idyllic, exotic, or luxurious place.

Word Origin:

Alteration of Shang-tu, the name of an ancient city in what is now the Inner Mongolia region of China, as portrayed in Coleridge’s poem Kubla Khan (1816).

    This lovely word always conjures up images of mythical or fantasy cities – as well as several songs about it. Love that second image. 🙂

    I had no idea that Xanadu was an actual word. I remember there was a movie from wayyyyyy back called Xanadu, but I didn’t know that it was a real English word. Hmmmm, I guess we do learn something new every day eh.
