Late 16th century: from Scots and northern English dialect feck (from effeck, variant of effect) + -less.

She can’t rely on her feckless son.
The feckless man no longer cares for his wife ‘s ideals, or even for himself.
noun:
The drill sergeant’s intent was to convince all therecruits of their fecklessness.
adverb:
He performed his functions fecklessly.
